“Iddawmanity Iddawma-nity IddawmanityId…” David paused, “you’re so stupid. Oh my gosh.”
“Hey, that is pretty funny,” I chuckled to myself.
“He he he he,” Wizard cackled as he appeard again on the couch.
“What the…” David exclaimed as he jumped back like a lady who just saw a mouse by her feet,
“Who the heckin’ H are you?
“Um, Wizard. Didn’t Jason just say that?” was the reply.
“Okay,” I said, “Now you know I’m not crazy, right?”
“Or we both are.” David said.
“Wizard,” I said, changing the subject, “Alright, what were you talking about, when you said that this world and your world are going to die off?”
“Alright, that princess? Her name is Sonya and she is the daughter of Aricia.”
“Okay, who’s Aricia?” I asked
“Aricia is the Queen.”
“Okay, so this Sonya girl is the princess” David interjected.
Wizard look over at David as if to examine him. “Wow, I like this guy. He’s really quick.”
“Wait! So, keep going. What does this have to do with me?” I said, frustrated.
“Alright, you can’t tell me to wait and keep going. If you’ll just let me talk I’ll tell you everything you need to know.” He gave us the look that teachers give to hush their students and then continued, “Okay, where was I? Oh yes, Aricia is the queen and also Princess Sonya’s mom. But also she…” He paused for effect “…is that old hag that you turned into a rabbit”
“What there is no way that’s the queen. One,” I held up my index finger, “how could someone that ugly could be the mom of someone that beautiful? and two,” I joined it with my middle finger, “if that’s her, then why the heck does she have her daughter, trapped in a dungeon?”
“Wow those are two very good questions. I wonder which I should answer first” He scratched his bald head.
“Well never mind that. Just tell me why I’m in trouble.” I politely demanded.
“Well, you see…Well, what it is… Alright, I’m just going to have to start from the beginning. What do you know about Greek mythology?”
“You mean like Zeus and Hercules and all those guys?” David chimed in.
“Yeah all that.”
“Well that was all I know about it.” He said turning to me, ‘Jason?”
“Uh, not much, just a bunch of stories about gods that never existed” I said.
Alright, well forever ago, there was this goddess, Nyx, the goddess of night; and she had two twin sons. No one knows who the father was, there are like three different guys it could have been, but that’s a completely different soap opera. Well anyway, these two brothers, Hypnos and Thanatos, grew up hating each other. Hypnos was the god of sleep, and believed that no one should ever have to die because he could revive their tired bodies every night, while they slept. Thanatos, on the other hand, was the god of death. He thought that if man lived on earth too long, they would find a way to turn against the gods and there would be this huge battle and it would just be bad. So basically there was all this Cain and Able tension between the two twin brothers.”
“Wait, are you referencing the bible while explaining Greek mythology?” I asked.
“Just a comparison. I was trying to get some common ground.”
“Sorry, keep going”
“So, to make a long story short, Nyx had the both of them and their families exiled, so they could work out their differences, which never actually happened. When they got there, they immediately divided the land into two halves on either side of the river. Hypnos’ half was called Somnus, and Thanatos’ half was called Moros. Since then, there have been all kinds of wars and battles and duels and name calling… you name it they did it; Actually the only thing the two brothers have ever agreed on was to put a curse on both groups of people so that their seed would never be mixed with each other. So now, the land remains divided and we all stay on our side, while the offspring of Thanatos stays on their side.”
“So you’re the offspring of this Hypnos guy?” David asked, “So doesn’t that make you all gods too?”
“Well, not exactly. You see, when everyone was exiled, they were also made mortal, They kept their powers, but now only the direct descendents of Hypnos and Thanatos have as much power as they did.”
“Which I’m guessing is the queen and the princess.” I said.
“Precisely,” Wizard agreed, “but something happened about 35 years ago. Okay, remember when I said that we stay on our side and they stay on theirs? Well, that didn’t always happen. Queen Aricia, who was a princess then, went to the river and for whatever reason, went across to the other side. She met a young man there by the name of Thaddeus, Prince Thaddeus, and they fell in love and created ways to see each other as often as possible. So, as you probably guessed, one thing quickly led to another and soon enough, they had a predicament on their hands.”
“She was pregnant,” David proudly declared.
“Yeah, and…” Wizard started to say.
“So the two had their seed mixed and that brought on the curse,” I spittballed, “so she trapped her own daughter in the dungeon?”
“You know I was actually telling this story, but if you two want to keep going, then by all means, go ahead.” Wizard said.
“No,” I said sitting down, “Sorry, keep going.”
“Alright, so the only way for the curse not to take affect is to keep the princess in the castle.”
“What’s so special about the castle?” asked David.
“Ok, the castle, is like the double A of Somnus. It generates all the energy and magic anyone there needs to live and do their jobs throughout the day.”
“Wait what jobs?’ I asked
“Sorry, we’re kind of getting off subject, but really quick: Everyday we go to work, just like you guys.”
“Ha, Jason hasn’t worked since high school.” David joked.
“Well, whatever. Everyday, we go out and make dreams for everyone on earth. Basically we are actors, set designers, and special effects artists. That was one of the great ideas Hypnos had so the people on earth could rest more fully. But getting back to the castle, there is one in Moros too. Hypnos and Thanatos each built one so all their people could have some of the powers they had. Their powers aren’t as…”
“Powerful?” David tried to finish his sentence.
“Yeah, and it only lasts about three days until they have to go back and basically charge up again. Now, the energy from the Somnus castle counteracts the energy from the Moros castle, and visa versa. So when the queen put Sonya in the dungeon, it cancelled out the powers she had from her father, which were over life and death. Now let’s say if she were to escape,” he looked at me judgingly, “after three days time…”
“Everyone that went to sleep would die.” I gasped
Wizard nodded, “And without any people to visit somnus, we would all waste away, because just like you are revived every time you sleep, we receive power and energy from every one that goes there.
